With a Colt style C&B if you don't cut a loading gate you have to drive the wedge out and remove the barrel every time you reload. Include the conversion cylinder in the deal and it is just a part.įor the 1858 Remington design and the Ruger Old Army, it is designed to be loaded and unloaded with the cylinder popped out of the gun, which is really easy with a Remington or an Old Army.
If you go to sell it, pop the C&B cylinder back in and it is a non-firearm, no paperwork required. You have done nothing to permanently alter the gun. Change back to the C&B cylinder and it is a non-firearm again.
Pop the C&B cylinder out and pop in the cartridge conversion cylinder and you are holding a firearm. That is one reason I prefer the R&D design, particularly when talking about the 1858 Remington. And the quirky part of the law is you have to keep it forever, you cannot sell it. Just so you know, if you alter the frame on a C&B revolver by installing a loading gate, as far as the BATF is concerned, you have permanently changed it from a non-firearm, to a cartridge firing handgun.
